Halloway Institute. Formerly Cold Store No. 4. June 1994.

The engagement is one paragraph long: find Thomas Rowe, employed here until June, and recover the material he left with. No description of the material. That is the part that should have made you say no.

The front door was open — nobody leaves a door like that open in this district.

CENIZA is a single-screen mystery platformer in the shape of an early-90s VGA game. Thirty-one connected rooms across six zones, and every item you find opens somewhere that was shut before: a crowbar, a flashlight for the rooms the dark has taken, studded boots for the ledges you couldn't reach, a rope for the shafts, an ice pick for the frozen walls of the cold store.

It happened here once already, in 1974. That is the part nobody wrote down.

(Ceniza is Spanish for ash. You'll find out why.)

Two people the firm could have sent

Pick one before you go in, and they play differently — starting kit, how much punishment they take, how hard they hit and how far a bandage goes.

  • Nora Keane, loss adjuster. Brings the crowbar, so boarded doors open from the first minute, and her bandages go further.
  • Frank Doyle, recovery agent. Comes armed and takes more punishment, but nothing boarded opens until he finds a bar.

Each one writes their own notes on four of the things they find.

What's in it

  • 31 hand-built rooms across six zones, connected metroidvania-style
  • 51 pieces of story: 30 documents you find, thirteen case notes that write themselves as you work it out, and four more that depend on who the firm sent
  • Four weapons, and none of them wins at everything: a crowbar that never runs out, a revolver with counted rounds, a sawn-off shotgun for what comes in groups, and a flare pistol that lights the dark and sets things burning
  • Six kinds of thing that wants you gone, including one the lead bounces off
  • Darkness that only your flashlight — or a burning flare — pushes back
  • Thin ice, wind that leans on you, and a freight lift you have to get running
  • An original soundtrack, synthesised in the browser: one theme per zone
  • Typewriter save points
  • Playable in English and Spanish (switch it on the title screen)
  • Plays on a phone: the on-screen controls appear by themselves the moment you touch the screen

Controls

Arrows or A-D to move · Up / W to jump and climb · E to use, read and take · X to shoot · Q to switch weapon · C for bandages · I inventory · M map · L documents · N sound.

On a phone, a pad appears under the screen and you can leave the keyboard alone.

Click or tap the game once before you start, so the keyboard and the audio wake up.

Made with no assets

There is not a single image or sound file in this project. Every sprite, tile and painted backdrop is written as rows of text over a 57-colour VGA palette and drawn onto a canvas when the game loads. The 5×7 bitmap font is drawn by hand, glyph by glyph. The effects are square waves and noise synthesised with WebAudio, and the music is a small sequencer running on top of it — long reverb, few notes, and chords that never quite resolve. TypeScript, Vite and Phaser 3.

Instituto Halloway.

TypeScript, Vite y Phaser 3.
